Clínica CEMTRO’s Hip Unit, led by Dr. Raúl Torres specializes in hip pathologies for athletes and young adults, as well as in hip preserving surgery.

Hip Unit

Hip specialists have been traditionally concerned with hip AO and fractures, so common among the elderly.  However, hip pathologies are appearing in young people at an earlier stage in live and an on-time treatment  may well prevent AO and very likely the need for a future hip implant.

Clínica CEMTRO’s Hip Unit, led by Dr. Raúl Torres specializes in hip pathologies for athletes and young adults, as well as in hip preserving surgery.  The unit’s philosophy is to perform an early diagnosis so that appropriate treatment follows and future AO appears in the hip, leading to hip replacement. If such a replacement is unavoidable, choosing the best implant for young patients is a must.

Clínica CEMTRO’s Hip Unit team has specialized in hip arthroscopy to prevent acetabular labrum lesions and femoroacertabular impingment.

It has also specialized in alternatives to traditional hip implants such as resurfacing, short stems and modular necks which enable surgeons to save young patients’ bone and reduce possible future complications when further replacements are needed as patients get older, something surgeons must keep in mind with young patients.

HIP ARTHROSCOPY

FEMOROACETABULAR IMPINGMENT

Hip arthroscopy is a relatively new, highly specialized technique with which labrum tears and femoroacetabular impingements, among many other injuries can be treated.

These lesions usually degenerated into hip OA and there was no choice but to replace the hip joint.  Hip arthroscopy is a treatment which delays or even prevents the appearance of OA and thus the need for joint implant, allowing clinicians to follow joint preservation strategies, today’s paradigm in modern hip surgery.

This technique requires highly experienced and skills surgeons for best outcomes.  Dr. Raúl Torres Eguía performs over 100 hip arthroscopies every year and also trains other surgeons in Spain and South/Central America in this technique.  He is thus a world reference in hip arthroscopy.

AVASCULAR NECROSIS OF THE HIP

IMPLANT FOR YOUNG PATIENT

Hip prostheses replace a damaged hip for a metallic, plastic or ceramic implant which performs the same joint movements as the original components.  Hip function is thus restored and any consequent pain, lessened and managed. Some of the most frequent causes for needing a hip implant are hip OA and hip fractures, closely followed by chronic pain due to infections or rheumatoid disorders, as well as hip dysplasia sequels or Perthes’ disease.

Clínica CEMTRO performs over 350 hip implant surgeries every year, many of them for young adults and athletes who have suffered or are suffering from an underlying injurty or OA has destroyed the joint.  The hospital offers this kind of patients its experience in alternatives to traditional implants such as resurfacing or short-stem implants.  All these prostheses have the aim of preserving as much bone as possible in young patients in order to avoid future complications such a late prosthesis substitution.

HIP FRACTURES

STRESS FRACTURES

Hip fractures are one of the most common threats to elderly people due to loss of bone calcium and a higher risk of falling.

These fractures bring with them an enormous amount of medical complications: abscesses, vein thrombosis, residual mobility limitations, infections… Premature surgery, the most appropriate option via an intramedullary nail or a hip implant, management by an internal medicine team and proper rehabilitation are all key factors if we wish to attain the best recovery in patients.
